The merciful beauty of books

I’m not going to sugarcoat it. It’s the week before BEA, and I’m bat-guano crazy right now. But the book gods take pity on poor bookmakers and send us shiny new books when we need them most. Yesterday, |-1| came in and my copy got swept away before I could shoot it. I was able to pin down today’s gift from above, Blythe Woolston’s The Freak Observer:

And this one is concealing something beneath its jacket:

imageI adore the attention to detail our designers have showed in the three Lab novels for fall. They’re designs worthy of the texts they contain.

Free copy of The Freak Observer for the first commenter to correctly identify the little fellow on the cover beneath the jacket. If I ever get a tattoo, that’s going to be it.

* Train wreck sentence corrected. Doesn't anyone edit this thing?

It... looks like a remarkably surly puffin? As drawn by Tove Jansson?

...Yeah, I got nothing.

Also: They’re designs worthy of the text’s the highlight.

I spent about two minutes trying to figure out what that was supposed to say. You aren't kidding about the bat-guano crazy, are you? :D

Hope you have a great time at BEA!

I love that Tove got a shout out...I'm a Fillyonk, myself. (With some Little My thrown in...)

There are days I fear I may be a Hemulen, but I confess to a deep fondness for the Dweller Under the Sink and also Salome, the Little Creep.

*has just spent the last ten minutes searching her entire collection of Moomin books in case the Unidentified Creature actually WAS drawn by Tove Jansson*

Oh, THERE you are -- Jheronymous Bosch, "Bird With Letter". Bizarre and wonderful!

...although I am probably not supposed to be entering this contest, am I? I should just be saying, "O editor mine, I should rather like a copy of this book, please." In which case I bestow my largess upon the next commenter and retire in shame.

I'm the next commenter, but I'm not taking it either since I just posted the link for this blog on Facebook...

Silly me.

Good lord. What a train wreck of sentence. R.J., this is not indicative of the editorial comments you'll be getting soon, I promise.

Hee! I believe you, Andrew.

You funny people!

This is incredibly entertaining!

I looked it up--"Bird with Letter"--and it's a part of a Bosch PAINTING: "The Temptation of Saint Anthony."

Me, I'm a fan of St. Dominic.

So delighted by the attention my compatriot Tove Jansson is getting in this crowd - the figure does look like it would fit in Muumilaakso, but, uh, surly?!

Oh oh, Jansson characters!

I try to be less like Sniff and more like Snufkin. I do have a very special place in my heart for The Little Creep though.
