Carolrhoda accepts limited solicited submissions from unagented authors. Announcements of these solicitations appear on this blog at irregular intervals. Carolrhoda does not accept unsolicited submissions or queries from unagented or unreferred authors, so please do not submit anything not described below. Note that if you attended a conference where I spoke, you may submit for the time specified at the conference. Please refer to the conference in the subject line of your email.
Here's what I'm soliciting now: Nothing.
Here's how you should send it to me, if I'm accepting:
Please email a very brief cover and your manuscript to carolrhodasubmissions@lernerbooks.com. I am a notoriously inattentive query/cover reader and a fanatical reader of first pages, so let that be your guide to what I mean by "very brief." Include the word "QUERY" in the subject (I'm not asking for queries, I know. Just put the word in the subject line and ignore the contradiction). Please put the cover letter in the body of the email and include the completed manuscript as an attachment. Do not send partials. Do not include any portion in the body of the email. Microsoft Word or RTF files much preferred. PDFs are OK if you need to show illustrations. All non-compliant emails deleted with prejudice and without reply. Click here to email.
How should you address your email?
"Dear Andrew" is fine. "Dear Mr. Karre," if you feel you prefer. "O Captain! My captain" is not acceptable. Please read this so you'll know not to embarrass yourself by addressing it to "Dear Carol," "Dear Ms. Rhoda," etc.
What Next?
Response time will be maddeningly slow, probably six months. I'm sorry. Remember, though, I'm not asking for exclusivity, so submit elsewhere--just send an email if you're about to accept an offer so that I can rend my garments for missing out on your brilliance.
And that's it. Sorry, I am not considering paper queries or submissions and will not ever again do so.

If the manuscript is already submitted elsewhere, are you okay with that?
I don't require exclusivity. Just let me know if it's sold or about to sell.
Thanks, Andrew. That's good to know.
Hope all is well in the Cities--I hear it's warmer there than it is here (no big surprise, huh?). But the geese are flying north now--noisily!--so spring and then summer are sure things.
Are you willing to look at ms. that were subbed before but have undergone major revisions?
If I asked to see revisions, I'd be happy to see the book again. If I didn't, then please don't resubmit.
What are your pay rates? Thank you very much.
Carolrhoda pays advances and royalties like any trade publisher. We do not do books on for hire or on spec. Does this answer your question?
Hello Mr. Karre,
Could you please tell me when (or if) the Carolrhoda lab site will become interactive?
Thank you.
If by "interactive," you mean when will the site feature previews of the books as well as video and audio from the authors, then I can say "soon." Did you mean something else?
Hello Mr. Karre,
Thank you for addressing my question. I was wondering in addition to what you mentioned would be available on the site, if there would be interaction, where fans of the authors can join a group dedicated to their books. And maybe at some point a forum where your authors can give aspiring writers tips and mention where they'd be doing a signing or reading once their book is launched.
Thank you again for taking the time to answer.
For some reason, I can't get to an email address when I click on the tab "click here to email". Is there another way to access an email address to submit a query?
Thanks,
kris

Hi Andrew,
I was just wondering if you would accept more than one manuscript from each author. I know some publishers only want one at a time.
Thanks for your time.
If you have several complete manuscripts, I'm happy for you to submit multiples.
Are manuscripts accepted through Friday or Thursday?
Thanks!
Any ms received by 11:59 on Friday night (April 30) will be considered. Thanks!
So... what's the count for a one-month open submission? Dozens? Hundreds?
What is your policy regarding artwork submissions?
Are your submission guidelines different for agents wishing to sub their clients work?
Submission guidelines don't apply to agents.
Hello;
Are you open to submissions yet? It's now late August.
Thanks :)
Sandie lee
No, I'm not open to submissions yet.
Thanks,
Andrew
Do you perfer a cover letter over a query?
Now that we're in the "maddeningly slow" territory of six months out from the April open period, should authors who subbed and haven't heard anything assume you're not interested?
If you haven't heard from me, then I haven't looked at the sub. I've never required exclusivity, so you're free to submit it elsewhere. I will do my best to get to each submission soon. Sorry I can't offer more closure than that.
Mr. Karre:
Will you still be accepting submissions in Oct. 2010?
If so, when should we send?
--Thanks
Hello Mr. Karre,
You had mentioned to check back in December to see if you are accepting submissions. Are you accepting submissions?
Do you have a policy for the submission of illustration samples?
Are Cold Calls acceptable? If so, what are the guide lines?
I'm not sure what a "Cold Call" is, but if you mean unsolicited submission, then, no. I'm not taking them now.
First person only on bastards and rogues?
Any person will do, but it's a good question.
I also review childrens books
Chaarmedone1512@aol.com
Right after I read your YA submission request re doomed romances pursued in spite of that knowledge, I saw for the first time the movie "Timer". Won't spoil it for you if you haven't seen it, but it's a fun example of a couple knowing that their relationship won't last forever or end in marriage, and they go for it anyway.
Do you ever solicit NF PB or PB Biographies?
Thanks much!
M:
I never have solicited NF or PBs (or PB bios). I don't really need to, so I doubt I will, but I wouldn't say never definitively. (I do have a vague idea for a picture book bio call, but it will be later in the year if it happens.)
-AK
Thanks. Any hints on your vague idea? Do you accept queries?
No to both.
I'm confused. You don't accept "unsolicited queries" fomr unagented writers. But right now you are "soliciting" YA novels. So does that mean unagented writers are good?
Correct. Any author may answer the solicitation, regardless of agent.
so excited you are accepting submissions! editing, editing, and polishing before I hit 'send'
Thanks!
Carolrhoda, is there a word count minimum? Are you looking for fiction or non-fiction?
The submission call closed earlier this month. I am NOT open for anything right now.
This may be off-topic, but I'm just curious. Why are there so many MORE writers of children's books nowadays, then ever before in history? The field seems to be completely clogged by so very many writers! So...why is this, I wonder?
I have a book that I self published, may I send you a copy of it?
No, thank you. I'm only interested in new work. Congratulations on your book.
Don't ask me why, but I wonder if your name, KARRE is pronounced the way it looks. (Like the sound of CAR)
I also wonder is it a coincidence that your last name happens to be a take on the pen name John le Carré, aka David John Moore Cornwell, the British author of espionage novels.
If you respond, fine. However, it not really necessary. Besides, I rather you keep up the work of publishing my manuscript. hehehe
The name is pronounced "car." The resemblance to the spy novelist is coincidental.
Hi Mr. Karre... ready for submissions yet?
No.
Mr. Karre, do you respond to every manuscript submitted to you?
Ideally, yes. Eventually.
Hi, I submitted in April 2012 at your invitation. Are you still considering anything from then? Thanks. Flinch is my book.
